I'm a blogger more or less by accident. I created this LiveJournal acount as a placeholder, and slid into posting to it regularly over the space of couple of years, when I was still mostly using Usenet as my bully pulpit. Even now, I go for months without posting anything sometimes. And by far the most popular essay I ever put up wasn't even my own writing. In 2006, I invited a marine biologist friend of mine to comment on the biology of tentacle porn, and a few weeks later he sent me A Brief Essay on the Sad Lack of Imagination in Invertebrate Oriented Erotica with Brief Notes on the Lascivious Nature of Both the Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa, or, Getting Beyond 'Hur hur! That Squid Tentacle Looks like Penis!' , which drew a great deal of attention, eventually being featured on BoingBoing and ErosBlog, among other places. Here's a little sample: Takinga brief stroll over to class gastropoda, the snails, there are a few possibilities that are not too much of a stretch for the tentacularly fixated. Namely, most snails have antennae. And not only do they have very tentacle like antennae indeed, but they are laden with sensory structures! How perfect! Go, look at a snail or limpet (whose suction ability ought not to be ignored), and examine the waving lubricated little appendages. There! It may not be truly original, but it's something. Or, you have the possibilities of a mutant nudibranch, its phallic cirri waving in the air, filled with goo sequestered from consuming some amour inducing plant. Of course, class gastropoda also adds one quite kinky opther possibility. As a crotchety old paleontologist once told me, regarding gastropod torsion (as can be seen in any volume of Brusca and Brusca), "To be a gastropod is to shit on one's head." For those of you who are in to that sort of thing, I hope I have provided some good fodder for new texts.
Balan's article also served to pique my own interest in the bizarre world of invertebrate nookie, and I've learned some amazing things about the sex lives of leopard slugs and flatworms since then. Ontological Engine features a trio of amorous flying geoduck clams--named Hubert, Dewey, and Louise--whose unusual sexual proclivities are partially the product of my own fevered mind and partially inspired by my conversations with Dr. Nusnubilis. For this chat, I've persuaded the good doctor to acquire a LiveJournal account of his own, so dr_nusnubilus is available this weekend to answer all your nagging little questions about sex with gastropods, cephalopods, nudibranches, and lophotrochozoans. Post your questions here, and he will address them to the best of his formidable ability. Because, you know, internet porn isn't weird enough yet.
vinnie_tesla, posting in circletpress @ 12:57 pm: I'm Vinnie, and I'll be your host for this weekend.
Hi, I'm Vinnie Tesla. I write dirty stories. Writing for Circlet now is a kind of coming home for me. A little more than ten years ago, I didn't write dirty stories. I didn't write anything much at all, except for the occasional self-pitying diary entry. I did read a great deal of both smut and SF, though, so I leapt at a chance to intern with Circlet press for a semester. At Circlet, I luuuuuved reading the slush pile (the stack of unsolicited manustripts from would-be authors). Apparently that was pretty eccentric of me. Evryone else shunned it, except for Circlet's cat, Tai Gao, who showed a great fondness for sitting in it. Some of the fiction in the sluspile was very good, and what wasn't was often bad in fascinating ways. ceciliatan eventually asked me if seeing all that terrible fiction was inspiring me write anything of my own. "Oh, absolutely," I told her, "pretty soon, I think." A decade whizzed by before my chops and my self-confidence had blossomed enough that I wanted to take on writing a story specifically for Circlet. I'd written a bunch of naturalistic (or mundane, if you prefer) sex stories, which I'd posted to the internet, to some modest amount of very gratifying praise. I'd also been the kiss of death for a couple small anthologies which had promptly folded the moment I sent them my work. Circlet's Steampunk ebook project intrigued me, though. So I mashed a couple different notions from my idea hopper together (more on that in a later post, I think), and banged out a rather long short story called The Ontological Engine, or, The Modern Leda. Circlet accepted it, but decided to use it in their genderqueer anthology, Up for Grabs, instead of the steampunk one. I'm excerpting the introductory section here, so it should be pretty self-explanatory. It's nicely self-contained (and reasonably filthy), but does have the downside that some of the most important characters for the subsequent story don't appear yet here. I'll tell you a little more about them later. ( Professor and Mrs. Hargreaves, and the unfortunate affair of the Electrick Vibratorium )

Eagle Publishing closed its doors today with less than 12 hours' warning. They published the Eagle Times, a daily covering the Claremont, N.H. and Springfield, Vt. area, and several weeklies. I am saddened, but not surprised, by this turn of events. They started making the same mistakes the other dailies are making: putting the bottom line ahead of product quality. Thus, veteran reporters who knew and understood the area were fired in favor of unseasoned recent college grads; stories were truncated and often ran several days after they were timely or relevant; staff morale crashed. Today's edition, the last, is a masterpiece of denial. All the explanation we readers got were a few lukewarm comments from the publisher about how sad this was. On the Web site, the only mention of the closing is under state news -- for the wrong state. However, both versions have rather large ads proclaiming to advertisers that they reach 90,000 readers per week. Whoops! I feel terrible for my colleagues and friends over there, especially a freelancer who may not get paid after having provided page 1 coverage almost every day on the trial of a couple of anti-tax nutcases with a massive arsenal. Good luck, colleagues. Current Mood: sad Current Music: Birdsong

Looking for a used car dealer people recommend in an attempt to avoid the creepy, slimey, stereotypical used car dealership that rips you off. Also looking for places Not To Go. :) And bonus if it's along the skytrain or otherwise major bus route. Not that i'm asking for a lot. :P thanks.

I know there have been several posts about glasses in this community, but most of them have been about getting cheap, inexpensive or otherwise super affordable glasses. I care about price, but it's not my main concern. What opticians in Vancouver have the best selection of frames and the best customer service in your opinion? I am specifically looking for independent optical stores. I used to work in the industry in another city and just much prefer the service and products offered in independent stores. I have a difficult prescription and sinus/pressure issues and value excellent customer service above all. Thanks!

mrsnotnesbitt @ 11:53 pm: What’s next?
http://lifetheuniverseanddonna.ca/20090709/whats-next/ http://lifetheuniverseanddonna.ca/?p=4909 I’ve decided not to pursue paramedicine.
It kinda breaks my heart, but there it is. In BC, it’s basically not possible to start as a paramedic with BC Ambulance anywhere near Vancouver. And that was okay when I was just a single girl with my dog. A couple of years in the middle of nowhere wouldn’t kill me, and might even be fun for a change.
But… that’s not the case now. It’s not just me, it’s the man I’m crazy in love with, and I can’t bear the idea of being anywhere from 6-16 hours away by car. Honestly, starting off as a paramedic in this province isn’t easy to start with — crappy hours, low pay, a ton of work… there’s a reason BC Paramedics are on strike.
Maybe someone should mention this to BCAS? Dear BCAS: You are losing awesome new paramedics because the cost of entry is way too high for not enough reward. Stop that.
I knew all that, and I was willing to deal with it… until Nick. Damnit.
Nick, of course, works in an industry that is very Vancouver-centric. He’s got a mortgage. His ties here aren’t easily relocated to whatever 2-bit village I could get hired in. And, he makes way more than I do — and will continue to, for the foreseeable future, so it’s not even a question of if he could come with me. That would be ridiculous. Seventeen steps back to go one step forward? No, that’s just dumb.
So I’ve kind of been putting the whole thing on hold and not really thinking about it lately. But, 1 month ago, my EMR certificate expired (so I’d have to retake that), and so … I have to start thinking about what I’m doing now. Because apparently paramedicine isn’t it, and I’m not too happy about floundering about aimlessly.
I have some ideas that I’ve shared with a few people, but I’m not quite ready to make public yet. I still very, very much want to stay in health care. It’s fascinating, and quite frankly I love it so much more than I could have anticipated in my teens. Which explains my high school science grades, since if I’m not interested in something, I don’t bother trying. (I can’t explain the good mark in math. That one just confuses me.) So my first goal is going to be to upgrade a couple high school science classes or replace them with entry level University classes. They’re basically the same ‘level’, but the high school upgrades are free… but take longer. Biology, for one — I never took it in high school, and it’s something that will help me no matter what I choose.
So, I’m kind of excited. It looks like no matter what I come up with, I’m going to be taking some classes in the fall. This is good, I miss casual education.
It’s a little rough, and I’m a little sad. But, I refuse to think of it as giving up my dream. I could get really, really resentful of Nick if I did that, and it’s certainly not his fault — he’s never once asked me to give up anything. This is all me, baby. But… I’m modifying it a little. I’m okay with modifying my dream if it means sticking with the best thing that ever happened to me.
queerasmoi, posting in vancouver @ 04:59 pm: Cheap/free contact lens fittings?
I got my eyes checked this year and used up my one-exam-per-48-months on my UBC insurance. However I did it with the intention of only getting glasses and not contacts. I am contemplating a trial of a few pairs of contacts because I haven't used them in years and they might be useful from time to time. (And, admittedly, because I want to dress up for a costume party where my glasses would just ruin it.) I called my optometrist's office and they would charge $48-68 for a fitting including one pair of trial lenses. And it won't be covered by insurance at all. Does anyone know any locations in Vancouver that would do a cheaper/free contact lens fitting if I already have a prescription? With perhaps cheap or free sample contacts?

thedeej @ 10:14 pm: new glasses on the way
Went to Vision Works in Brentwood and $800 later new glasses are coming. I suspect about a month. In one way I am glad that other place didn't end up calling me as I found a much better frame with the EasyClip sunglasses. It will take a bit to get used to the glass lenses again but for the thinness it's very much worth it. They are a light brown which i think I'd actually classify as a bronze so I am hoping it will soften my look. I brought Julie with me for a second opinion so I can post a picture once she sends it. I will say I love technology as years ago trying to see how I look in glasses with blurry eyes led to some bad eye wear choices. Julie was able to take the photo, I slip on my own glasses and I can actually see what i look like. Being at Brentwood if they call during the day I can just pop over on my lunch break to pick them up where they are ready.

Back in May, someone posted about Organic Armor. After looking at their site, I decided to inquire about the custom orders they advertised to see if it might be worth splurging on one of the awesome hats they do. For me, a good hat is a lifesaver -- I'm a student of archaeology in Virginia, and we get a lot of heat and a lot of sun and a lot of weather in general. So I wrote to them and asked whether the materials they used could stand up to Virginia summers (yes!), and then how much it might cost to have Paul design one of their cowboy hats with a more steampunky look to it. For me personally, I also mentioned fire, rivets, and something with a sort of alchemical feel to it, with a good brim to keep off the sun. The woman who answered my E-mails, Jennifer, was extremely nice (and extremely understanding of my taking 2 weeks to pay when the bank decided arbitrarily to change ALL of my account numbers for "security" reasons), very communicative and quick to reply. The price in the end was around $200 -- I hesitate to give an exact number because as someone who does commission work myself, I know that there can be all sorts of unforeseeable variables. But I thought what I paid was a damn fair price for a commissioned piece of one-of-a-kind gear made of sturdy materials which I plan to make good use of. It was about a month before I got an E-mail saying the hat was finished and had been shipped. I finally got the end result today, which is pictured below. The hat is spectacular (though I'm afraid my face is less so :P). It is, as advertised, made of sturdy material and while it's heavier than a gardening hat, for all the bells and whistles on it I would indeed call it pretty light material, very easy to wear, good fit. I would highly recommend these folks for anyone who wants a special piece made for costuming or even every-day wear. They're great to work with and the results are just awesome. ( Crappy photo of my ugly mug + awesome hat within XD )
